FD Calculator works out the maturity amount and interest of a fixed deposit from the deposit, the yearly rate, the tenure and how often interest is compounded. Savers comparing deposit offers can try monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly compounding, or simple interest paid at maturity, and see how the value grows in a year-by-year table. It is a calculation from the numbers you enter, not advice.
How to use
- Type the Deposit amount, in any currency; no currency symbol is shown.
- Type the Yearly interest rate as a percentage, such as 7. A rate of 0 is allowed.
- Type the Tenure as a whole number and choose Years, Months or Days.
- Choose the Interest option: compounded monthly, quarterly, half-yearly or yearly, or simple interest at maturity. Use the one your deposit offer states; this page does not know what any bank uses.
- Read the Maturity amount and Interest earned, then the table for each completed year and, for a part year at the end, the row at maturity.
Examples
A deposit of 100,000 at 7% a year for 5 years, compounded quarterly, matures at 141,477.82, so the interest earned is 41,477.82. After the first year the table shows 107,185.90.
With simple interest for 6 months instead, the same deposit matures at 103,500.00. Notice how quarterly compounding over 30 months gives 118,944.45, more than simple interest would for the same time.
Limits
With compounding the formula is A = P × (1 + r / n)^(n × t), where n is the periods a year and t the years; a tenure in days counts 365 days a year, which is our own choice. Simple interest uses A = P × (1 + r × t). Bank figures can differ because of rounding, day-count rules and payout options. Tax deducted at source (TDS) is not included. Deposits up to 1,000,000,000,000, rates up to 50% and tenures up to 50 years, 600 months or 18,250 days are accepted; those limits are our own choice.
FAQ
Which compounding does my bank use?
Check the deposit terms or ask the bank. Many offers state it, and it can differ by tenure and by payout option, so this tool lets you choose.
Does the maturity amount include tax?
No. Any tax deducted by the bank, and income tax you owe on the interest, are not taken off here.
How is a tenure in months or days handled?
Months are divided by 12 and days by 365 to get years, and the formula is applied to that fraction of a year, including a final part period.
