Crop Image cuts a JPG, PNG or WebP picture to a rectangle you set in pixels, or to a shape such as square or 16:9, in your browser. It is handy for a square profile photo, a wide banner, a portrait story frame, or for trimming an unwanted edge off a scan. The cut keeps the original format and full detail inside the rectangle, so nothing is scaled or blurred.

How to use

  1. Drop one picture on the box, or click it to choose one. Its width and height in pixels appear under the box.
  2. Pick a Shape. Free leaves every side up to you; a ratio fills the boxes with the largest centred crop of that shape, and the width and height then follow each other.
  3. Adjust Left and Top to move the rectangle, and Width and Height to change its size. All four are pixels counted from the top left corner of the picture.
  4. Press Crop, check the preview, then press Download.

Examples

A test picture of 1,200 by 800 pixels with the Square (1:1) shape becomes an 800 by 800 crop that starts 200 pixels from the left, the centre of the picture, and downloads as photo-cropped-800x800.png. With 16:9 the same picture gives 1,200 by 675 pixels starting 62 pixels from the top. Notice that a ratio crop always keeps as much of the picture as the shape allows.

Limits

One picture at a time, up to 25 MB, as Quick facts shows, and with at most 50 megapixels. The rectangle is set with numbers rather than dragged, and it must lie inside the picture; one that crosses an edge is refused with the size of the picture. JPG and WebP are saved again at 92% quality, so a JPG crop is not bit for bit the original. Safari cannot write WebP, so there a WebP picture is saved as PNG and the result says so. Phones have less memory than computers, so a very large picture may fail on a phone before these limits.

FAQ

Is the picture uploaded while I crop it?

No. Your browser opens the picture and cuts out the rectangle on this page. Nothing is sent to a server.

Can I crop to an exact size such as 600 by 600 pixels?

Yes. Choose Free or Square, then type 600 in Width and Height and set Left and Top to place the square. If the picture is smaller than 600 pixels on a side, the crop is refused, because cropping cannot add pixels. Use Resize Image first in that case.

Why does the height change when I type a width?

A fixed shape is selected, so the height is worked out from the width to keep that shape. Choose Free when the two sides should be set on their own.
