Resize Image changes the width and height of a JPG, PNG or WebP picture, either to exact pixels or by a percentage, inside your browser. Use it to shrink a large camera photo for a website, to meet the pixel size a profile picture needs, or to enlarge a small icon. The result keeps the original format, and you can check its size and preview before saving it.

How to use

  1. Drop one picture on the box, or click it to choose one. Its current width, height and file size appear under the box.
  2. Under Resize by, pick Width and height in pixels or Percentage.
  3. For pixels, type the new width or height. With Keep proportions on, the other side follows so the picture is not stretched; turn it off to set both sides yourself.
  4. For a percentage, type a number from 1 to 1000; 50 halves both sides.
  5. Press Resize, check the preview and the numbers, then press Download.

Examples

A test picture of 1,200 by 800 pixels, resized to a width of 600 with Keep proportions on, becomes exactly 600 by 400 pixels, and the file name gains the new size: photo-600x400.png. The same picture at 33% becomes 396 by 264 pixels, because each side is rounded to the nearest whole pixel. Notice that the proportions stay 3 to 2 in both cases.

Limits

One picture at a time, up to 25 MB, as Quick facts shows. The original may have at most 50 megapixels, and the new size may have at most 16,384 pixels on a side and 50 megapixels in all; anything larger is refused with a message. Enlarging cannot add detail, so a picture made bigger looks softer. JPG and WebP are saved again at 92% quality. Safari cannot write WebP, so there a WebP picture is saved as PNG and the result says so. Phones have less memory than computers, so a very large picture may fail on a phone before these limits.

FAQ

Is my picture sent to a server?

No. The picture is decoded, redrawn and saved by your own browser on this page. Nothing is uploaded, and no copy is kept after you close the tab.

Why does the other box change when I type a width?

Keep proportions is switched on. The tool works out the matching height from the shape of the original so faces and buildings are not squashed. Switch it off when a form demands two exact numbers that do not match that shape.

Does resizing keep the photo details such as the date?

No. Saving a new picture keeps only the pixels, so details like the camera model, the date and the location are left out of the result.
