Income Tax Calculator India estimates the income tax of a resident individual for tax year 2026-27, under the new and the old regime side by side. It is for salaried people and others who want a quick idea of their tax, and of which regime costs less, before they look at their own case in detail. Every figure it uses is listed on the page with its official source and the date we checked it.
How to use
- Type your Salary for the year, before any deduction. The standard deduction is taken from it: ₹75,000 in the new regime and ₹50,000 in the old, or the salary itself if it is less.
- Type any Other income taxed at slab rates, such as interest or rent after its own deduction.
- Type the Deductions you claim in the old regime, such as under section 80C, as one total. The new regime ignores them.
- Pick your Age during the year. It changes only the old regime, whose tax-free amount is ₹2,50,000 below 60, ₹3,00,000 from 60 to 79 and ₹5,00,000 at 80 or older.
- Read the table. It shows each step for both regimes, and the line above it says which one gives less tax and by how much.
Examples
The page opens on a salary of ₹15,00,000 with ₹2,00,000 of old-regime deductions, below 60. The new regime takes ₹75,000 off, taxes ₹14,25,000 at ₹93,750 and adds ₹3,750 of cess: ₹97,500. The old regime takes ₹50,000 and ₹2,00,000 off, taxes ₹12,50,000 at ₹1,87,500 and adds ₹7,500 of cess: ₹1,95,000. So the new regime gives ₹97,500 less. A salary of ₹12,75,000 in the new regime leaves ₹12,00,000 taxable, and the rebate of up to ₹60,000 brings the tax to nil.
Limits
This is an estimate for one resident individual, using the slab rates, the standard deduction, the rebate under section 156 with its marginal relief in the new regime, the surcharge with its marginal relief and the 4% Health and Education Cess of tax year 2026-27, as listed on the page. It treats all income as taxed at slab rates. It does not handle capital gains or other income taxed at special rates, the lower surcharge cap on dividends and capital gains, family pension, losses, agricultural income, non-residents, Hindu undivided families or firms. It does not check your deductions against their limits. Amounts are whole rupees up to ₹1,000 crore, a limit we chose, and results are rounded to the nearest rupee.
FAQ
Which regime applies if I choose nothing?
The new regime is the default under section 202 of the Income-tax Act, 2025. You pay old regime rates only if you opt for them, and the rules about when you can switch are in the Act.
Why is my tax nil on a salary of 12.75 lakh?
The new regime takes a standard deduction of 75,000 rupees, leaving 12 lakh taxable. The tax on 12 lakh is 60,000 rupees, and the rebate under section 156 cancels up to exactly that amount.
Is this the final tax I have to pay?
No. It is an estimate from the listed rules only. Tax deducted at source, advance tax, interest and your own facts all change what you owe, so check your case before you file.
