PDF Metadata Editor shows the title, author, subject, keywords, creator and producer stored inside a PDF, and lets you change or remove them. These fields travel with the file: readers show the title in the window bar, search engines may index it, and the author field can reveal a name you did not mean to share.
How to use
- Drop a PDF on the box, or click it to choose one. A table lists every field as it is now, with the creation and modification dates and whether the document has an XMP metadata stream.
- Change any field in the boxes below the table. Leave a box empty to remove that field from the file, or press Clear all fields to empty every box at once.
- Tick the box to remove the creation and modification dates as well, if you want them gone.
- Press Save. A second table shows the fields read back from the new file, and Download saves it with
-metadataadded to the name.
Examples
A report whose Author says jsmith and whose Title says Draft v3 can be saved with the title Annual report 2025 and an empty author. The saved table then shows the new title, (none) for the author, and None for the XMP metadata stream, because the stream that held the old values was removed.
Limits
Only the six fields and the two dates of the document information dictionary are edited. Other metadata may remain if the library cannot remove it: XMP attached to pages, pictures or fonts is not touched, and a PDF edited before may still hold older values that no reader shows. Password-protected PDFs are refused.
FAQ
Why is the XMP metadata stream removed?
Many readers show the XMP values before the information fields. If it stayed, a reader could still show the old title or author after you changed them. Removing it means the fields you saved are the ones readers find.
Does saving change anything else in the PDF?
The pages, fonts, pictures and bookmarks are carried over as they are, but the file is written out again, so its size can change a little. The tool does not add its own name as the producer or set a new modification date.
