US Federal Income Tax Calculator estimates the regular federal income tax for tax year 2026, bracket by bracket, for any of the four filing statuses. It is for workers, freelancers and households who want a quick idea of their federal tax, their marginal rate and how much of each bracket they reach. Every figure comes from the IRS revenue procedure for 2026, linked on the page with the date we last reviewed it. It is an estimate, not tax advice.

How to use

  1. Type your Income for the year in whole dollars, after any adjustments to income such as retirement contributions you deduct.
  2. Pick your Filing status. The brackets and the standard deduction both depend on it.
  3. Pick a Deduction. The standard deduction fills in the 2026 amount for your status. Choose itemized deductions to type your own total instead, or choose none when the amount you typed is already your taxable income.
  4. Read the estimated tax, your taxable income, your marginal rate and the share of your income that goes in tax, then the table that shows how much income falls in each bracket and the tax on it.

Examples

The page opens on a single filer with $100,000 of income and the standard deduction of $16,100, which leaves $83,900 taxable. The first $12,400 is taxed at 10%, or $1,240.00. The next $38,000 is taxed at 12%, or $4,560.00. The last $33,500 is taxed at 22%, or $7,370.00. The estimate is $13,170.00, the marginal rate is 22% and the tax is 13.17% of the income. Only the income inside a bracket is taxed at its rate.

Limits

This is regular federal income tax on ordinary income only, from the 2026 rate schedules. It leaves out state and local income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax, self-employment tax, every tax credit, the additional standard deduction for age or blindness, the lower standard deduction of a dependant, capital gains and qualified dividend rates, the alternative minimum tax, the net investment income tax and every deduction except the one you choose. It applies the rate schedules exactly to the cent; the tax on your return can be worked out differently. Amounts are whole dollars up to $1 billion, a limit we chose.

FAQ

What is the difference between my marginal rate and my effective rate?

The marginal rate is what the next dollar of taxable income would pay. The effective rate here is the total tax divided by the income you typed, so it is never higher than the top rate you reach.

Should I take the standard deduction or itemize?

This calculator does not decide that for you. Pick the standard deduction, note the tax, then pick itemized deductions with your own total and compare the two estimates. Whether you may itemize, and what counts, is set out in the IRS instructions for your return.

Which year should I use this for?

It uses figures for tax year 2026, which are the ones for the return you file in 2027. The IRS publishes new figures for each tax year, and this page will show the year it uses.
