Add Text to Image writes your own words on a photo in several layers and saves the picture in the same format as the photo you gave. Use it for a caption on a holiday picture, a title on a thumbnail, a price on a product shot, or the top and bottom lines of a meme. Each layer has its own font, size, colour, outline and shadow, and you place it by dragging it or by typing its position.

How to use

  1. Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP photo on the box, or click it to choose one. A first text layer appears on the photo.
  2. Type your words in Text. Press Enter for a second line.
  3. Pick a font, a size as a percent of the picture width, a colour, an outline thickness and colour, and tick Bold or Shadow if you want them.
  4. Drag the text where you want it, or select it and use the arrow keys. Left and Top show its place as percents, and you can type them too.
  5. Press Add text layer for another text, and Layer 1, Layer 2 and so on to switch between them. Remove this layer deletes one.
  6. Press Save picture, check the preview, then press Download.

Examples

A 400 by 300 JPG with the default layer, Your text in white bold sans serif at 8 percent with a black outline, gives trip-text.jpg at 400 by 300 pixels with the words near the top left corner. Text at size 10 on a picture 1000 pixels wide is 100 pixels tall. Notice that a WebP saved in Safari comes back as PNG, with a note saying so.

Limits

One photo at a time, up to 25 MB and 16.7 megapixels (4,096 by 4,096 pixels, the largest canvas some phones allow); resize a larger photo first. Up to 10 text layers of 200 characters each, our own choice. Fonts come from your device, not from the web, so the same font can look a little different on another computer. Safari cannot write WebP pictures, so a WebP is saved as PNG there. JPG and WebP are saved again at 92 percent quality, so a small amount of detail is lost. Phones have less memory than computers and may fail earlier.

FAQ

Is my photo uploaded to add the text?

No. The photo is opened and drawn by this page in your browser, and the finished picture is made on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.

Why does my text look slightly different after saving?

The editor shows the text with the browser layout engine, and the saved picture is drawn on a canvas from the same numbers. Edges, outlines and shadows can differ by a pixel or two between the two.

Can I use my own font?

No. Only fonts installed on nearly every device are offered: Arial or Helvetica, Georgia or Times, Courier, Verdana and Impact. Loading web fonts would send a request to another site, so none are used.
